A transnational perspective on the history of the German Empire. Traditional historiography continues to explain the development of German society during the imperial era as a self-contained national history. In light of the actual interconnectedness of the world around 1900 and the contemporary enthusiasm for world politics, this viewpoint requires revision. The late 19th century was an era of globalization and entanglement of the world on an unprecedented scale.
