The history of psychodynamic methods could also be told as the history of their concepts of transference and countertransference. What has changed? Transference is no longer just the mistake with which the patient repeats early relational experiences, but also an attempt to involve and utilize the therapist in the resolution of inner conflicts. And countertransference is no longer an unavoidable disturbance, but an expression of the therapist's involvement in the psychotherapeutic relationship. Everyday relationships are also shaped by transference fantasies, but we keep these unconscious so that we do not "fall out of line." In the psychoanalytic situation, however, patients can free themselves from the constraints of experience and desire required in everyday life. The patient can seize the opportunity to explore this in the therapeutic process.
