Most people in Germany die in institutions such as hospitals or nursing homes, where the staffing situation is often strained. To ensure that patients and residents can experience the end of their lives with dignity and security, numerous volunteer hospice companions support the professional staff. The volunteers bring relief to daily life and specifically to the situation of the dying through their time, care, attention, calmness, serenity, and openness. This manual prepares individuals for volunteer hospice companionship in a professional manner. It focuses on developing an inner attitude of mindfulness and appreciation towards dying individuals and their families. Through engaging with their own losses and the concept of dying, course participants learn to sensitively recognize the needs of people in their final phase of life.
