Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (TFP) is a specialized form of psychodynamic psychotherapy primarily used for patients with personality disorders. It was developed by Otto F. Kernberg as an outpatient individual therapy for the treatment of borderline disorders and is empirically validated as a disorder-specific and manualized treatment approach for borderline personality disorder. The focus of TFP is on working through the transference relationship between the patient and the psychotherapist. The psychoanalytic psychotherapy, which takes place face-to-face twice a week over several years, aims at the maturation and integration of the personality.
