In art history, still life painting is considered a genre in which immobile objects are presented in empty spaces against a flat, vaguely defined background, creating images where time seems to stand still. This work questions this traditional view. On one hand, still lifes with illusionistically painted objects that extend over the edge of the table and thus out of the picture and into the viewer's space, along with reflections that mirror the viewer's space within the image, have developed strategies to conquer and occupy the space beyond the picture. On the other hand, the depiction of touched food and used dishes suggests that the represented scene encompasses a time period that extends far beyond the brief moment of representation.
