Under the conditions of a dictatorship or an authoritarian regime, a specific usage of language emerges, in which power relations are supported, subversively exposed, undermined, or openly criticized. What is revealing is not only what, when, how, by whom, and in what public or private space is said, but also the manner in which something is not said and when, about what, and how silence is maintained. This volume examines the specific usage of language during and after dictatorship or in and after authoritarian regimes from a German-Arab perspective and is the result of a three-year interdisciplinary collaboration between German and North African scholars. With the societal transformation processes that many Arab countries have begun and few have continued, the topic is highly relevant.
