The further the scientificization of our world progresses, the more pressing the question of the status and meaningful engagement with science becomes. "Buchstaben-Folgen" reconstructs the project of Western science against the backdrop of the difference between orality and literacy. Reflecting on the complicated relationship between spoken language and writing, as well as on the correspondingly media-different forms of knowledge representation, allows for a more appropriate understanding of the ambivalent role of science in our culture. A science that is misunderstood in its status and reach can easily become ideology. The book brings together two debates that have hardly been linked so far: the interdisciplinary debate of the 1980s and 1990s regarding the cultural impacts of writing and literacy.
