In the 1920s, German Philosophical Anthropology emerged with the works of Max Scheler and Helmuth Plessner, soon supplemented by the studies of Arnold Gehlen. And although their central writings undoubtedly remain worth reading, the significant advancement of both philosophy and empirical human sciences makes it inevitable to readjust Philosophical Anthropology. Two things are required for this: On one hand, a connection to other philosophical currents must be established. In this regard, the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School presents itself as a coalition partner. The author discusses the numerous similarities between the two approaches—such as their interdisciplinary orientation—while not overlooking the significant differences. On the other hand, it is necessary to unreservedly open up to new empirical-theoretical concepts.
