Populist politics mobilizes its subjects with shared enemy images. These serve as a constitutive outside, providing cohesion to a perceived "people" that is closed and homogeneous. But how do populist actors manage to anchor this constructed identity in a positive foundation that transcends the break with the status quo? What needs to happen for this to seem prior to the discursively constructed antagonism and to consolidate the political project in the long term? Using the example of Argentina and the Kirchnerist discourse production surrounding the 2010 World Cup, the author illustrates how popular identities are made experientially tangible by narratively linking antagonistic conflict lines with established topoi from the repertoire of cultural practice.
