The hopes for peace after the end of the East-West conflict lasted only a short time: The wars in the Caucasus, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Africa, and Southeast Asia clearly demonstrate that with the end of the 20th century, it was not the age of wars that came to an end, but at best the age of interstate wars. War, like a chameleon, merely changes its form of appearance. Most of the wars currently being fought are internal and transnational conflicts, in which regular armies—if they are involved at all—are just one actor among many. Suddenly, in all its drama, what has been anticipated for several decades becomes visible: the denationalization of war.
