"When the Children Are United," published in 1995, was the first German-language book about punk, covering its origins up to the 1990s. The book is now in its 8th edition and is regarded as a standard work on the subject. It traces the journey from British punk in the 1970s through the hardcore movement of the 1980s to grunge in the 1990s and the so-called commercialization of punk in the video age. The book has undergone multiple revisions, and for the 6th edition, illustrations were included for the first time, while its historical character as a document of the times has been preserved: Martin Büsser wrote the book at a time when punk and hardcore had firmly entered the mainstream. The long-time contributor to the Zap fanzine bids farewell to "his" scene and describes how the commercialization of punk could have occurred.
