The performance and reliability of machine tool spindles are often limited by critical lubrication conditions. The focus of this work is to create opportunities for improving the spindle bearing system. To increase wear resistance under insufficient lubrication, PVD coatings are qualified based on their running and wear behavior. Over-lubrication conditions are verified through a prototype direct lubrication system in both test stand and spindle applications.
