The former Yugoslavia is no longer part of the personal experiences of many citizens of its successor states. Nevertheless, the writings about it fill an entire library. What accounts for the great interest in this vanished state? Tanja Petrovic explores this question in her book "Yuropa." In the first part, she addresses the perceptions of the former Yugoslavia that emerge in the statements of EU politicians and are also articulated within the post-Yugoslav states themselves. For instance, the term Western Balkans is most often defined negatively: it refers to the states that are (still) not part of the EU, but is primarily used to avoid naming what these states once were, namely parts of Yugoslavia. There is also a gradient of arrogance within the post-Yugoslav space, ranging from northwest to southeast.
