Constitutions are power structures. They empower and restrain, grant rights and set limits – for citizens as well as for the state. Their combination with the democratic principle of regular elections is considered the most intelligent method of organizing human coexistence for the long-term benefit of all and integrating heterogeneous interests within a community. As clear as the relevance of constitutions is, we know very little about their fate after adoption. Political science has evidently fallen for its own interpretations: it was, after all, political science itself that, since the mid-20th century, after the world wars and the anomie of new beginnings, assessed the systems of the West as particularly cohesive and, under the impression of block confrontation, held a high respect for constitutions as essential to democracy.
