More than three thousand people were allowed to die or were killed by the SS under the command of Adolf Haas at the concentration camp of Niederhagen/Wewelsburg and later in Bergen-Belsen. Some inmates, including Jews, were protected by the rising baker as long as they entertained him with music and art objects. In 1944, Haas was demoted, and his trail disappears amidst the chaos of war. To this day, he is considered missing.
