Hoheneck - The DDR Women's Prison. The place remains synonymous with the persecution of politically undesirable women in the GDR to this day. It is a site of terror. Here, torture took place, there were isolation and dark cells, and the GDR was oppressively harsh like hardly anywhere else. No word can evoke such deep emotion as the sight of an authentic location. Berlin photographer Rengha Rodewill has been following the traces of political prisoners in the former GDR for years, who, like those in Hoheneck, were assigned numbers after their arrests. Rengha Rodewill aims to contribute to the culture of remembrance of this notorious place, which epitomized the arbitrariness and distrust of the GDR, through this photographic documentation and the testimonies of former incarcerated women from Hoheneck. The result is over 200 haunting photographs.
