This paper highlights and analyzes the key differences between marriage (Marriage Act) and registered partnerships (Registered Partnership Act). A long ideological debate was necessary before the recognition of same-sex partnerships in 2010. Homosexual relationships were partially treated like non-marital cohabitations even before the Registered Partnership Act came into effect in 2010, but there was no possibility for institutionalization. The Registered Partnership Act largely aligns with the Marriage Act. However, there are some distinctions between registered partnerships and marriage. Since the introduction of the Registered Partnership Act, several differences have been addressed by the Constitutional Court, which are also considered in this paper, such as adoption rights, name rights, and custody matters. Nevertheless, differences still persist.
