Given the lively interest that has recently been directed towards the natural science of uncovering the normal archetype upon which the proportional structure of the human form is based, as well as the observation and exploration of the design principles that manifest uniformly and diversely in nature and art, I hope that this writing, which seeks to address the still unresolved question of the normal proportions of the human body in a new way and from a single foundational principle rooted in both philosophy and mathematics, will receive the attention that the importance of the subject deserves. Adolf Zeising, who is primarily known as the founder and promoter of the theory of the Golden Ratio, describes his new doctrine of proportions in this work.
