Surrounded by a tangle of very diverse, often contradictory reports, legendary or at least semi-legendary narratives, the venerable figure of Pythagoras emerges from those centuries when Greek speculation made its first serious attempts to explain the creation of the world. He is recognized as the founder of a school that combined deep moral seriousness and the pursuit of a dignified, strictly ordered way of life with an original explanation of the world and a whole series of strange, foreign views on the world and life. The further we go back in time, the scarcer the sources that provide us with information about the life and teachings of this remarkable man. It can be historically confirmed that Pythagoras lived in the 6th century BC, that he was from Samos, and later moved to Croton in Southern Italy.
