While there are already a number of excellent monographs and treatises on syphilitic eye diseases, I believe that this monograph can also provide a valuable guide for both specialists and practicing physicians in the extensive field of syphilitic eye diseases. It is based on an unusually large number of self-observed cases, and hardly any form of specific diseases is described that is not drawn from personal experience. Among the more than 50,000 eye patients I have treated over the past 23 years, there were 1,385 individuals for whom the syphilitic nature of their eye condition could be demonstrated with greater or lesser certainty – a significant number that appears even more remarkable.
