The folk legends, which have been the subject of active collection for half a century, provide the historian with evidence for the characterization of our ancestors and a reflection of their ways of thinking and acting. For the lover of poetry, there is a rich treasure of genuine folk poetry. Our Upper Valais possesses a very rich collection of legends that has also attracted the attention of foreign countries. The present work of the Historical Society of Upper Valais is the first of two volumes that contain various Valais folk legends. In addition to regional and local legends, such as the church construction of Redingen or the forest brother, fairy tales and legends as well as tales in the vernacular have also been compiled. The Publishing House of Sciences publishes historical literature by both well-known and lesser-known scientific authors.
