Inclusion and democracy form a connection that is often emphasized but has been little studied systematically. This volume aims to help close that gap: it brings together fundamental contributions, in-depth analyses, and concrete action perspectives on inclusive and democratic structures, cultures, and practices, including in international contexts, from an intersectional perspective. Its focus is on education, but it also incorporates aspects of civil society, culture, and economy - a multifaceted approach to a highly relevant and politically controversial topic.

Andreas Hinz was a professor of general rehabilitation and integration pedagogy at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg from 1999 to 2020, and prior to that, he was a member of scientific support for inclusive primary school trials at the University of Hamburg for 16 years. His responsibilities in Halle primarily concerned questions of inclusion, both within the specialization for rehabilitation educators and as a foundational qualification for all teacher training programs. Robert Kruschel is a research associate at the Institute for Special Education at the University of Leipzig. The trained special educator has been intensively engaged since 2010 with the implementation and management of inclusive education in the school system and conducts research on this topic both nationally and internationally, most recently concerning neighborhoods with special developmental needs.
