Product details

The analysis of organic substances aims to determine the elements present in them in terms of their nature and quantity; it constitutes one of the most important parts of analytical chemistry. The method used in earlier times to gain an understanding of the chemical composition of organic bodies bears no resemblance to current analysis. These bodies were subjected to dry distillation, and from the products obtained, conclusions were drawn about the differences in their composition. It is only in the last 30 years that this branch of chemistry has been refined according to scientific principles, and all modern methods differ only in the execution of these principles. To ascertain the ratios of the components in an organic compound, the simplest approach seems to be to isolate the elements individually; however, it is clear that if we are given compounds of these elements with others of known composition instead of the individual elements, we can determine their quantities with the same certainty. Dr. Justus Liebig was one of the most important chemists of his time and a pioneer of organic chemistry. He discusses here the general and specific methods of organic chemistry. This book is an unaltered reprint of the original edition from 1853.
