Just as medicine was transplanted from Greece to the Italian soil by the victorious eagles of the Romans, so too did the physicians assigned to the troops arrive in the conquered provinces as the Roman legions advanced during the time when Roman world domination was progressing unstoppable. It is well known that Julius Caesar, whose military genius brought Rome to the height of its warfare, was the one who initiated the conquest of Gaul, subjugating the peoples who inhabited what is now our Switzerland. From the moment the Roman soldiers, under this leader, set foot on the soil of our homeland, the epoch that underlies my research begins; for it is in this period and under this far-sighted director of Roman state interests that the first beginnings of a military medical service in the Roman army can also be traced back.
