The true life of an artist lies in the cultivation of their abilities and the practice of their talent. The external circumstances that accompany this are only significant and remarkable to the extent that they influence the development of their skills, either hindering or promoting it, and in the way they direct their genius, which largely determines the unique character of their works as a combined product of natural talent and education. In art history, only what has had a noticeable impact on the state of art is worthy of knowledge; what has been fruitful for its theoretical and practical, technical and aesthetic development and advancement, what has guided it correctly or misled it. Art history is as little concerned with mere names of artists who have achieved nothing remarkable as art itself.
