Sabrina Rieke analyzes the role of transfer pricing in international corporations for the functions of internal control and taxation. The resulting areas of tension are illustrated in a transfer pricing optimization model with various variants, as well as through a case study analysis. The fundamental insight of the work is that there is not a single transfer price that can fulfill all transfer pricing functions, nor can such a price exist. If, however, only one transfer price is used, as is often the case in corporate practice, the impacts on all transfer pricing functions that need to be fulfilled must be considered in order to achieve an optimal corporate profit.
