Hermann Muthesius (1861-1927), a German architect and theorist, was one of the founders of the German Werkbund. As a cultural attaché of the Prussian government at the German embassy in London, he published "The English House," a profound study of English residential architecture. As a prominent figure of Wilhelmine culture, he succeeded in introducing the model of the country house into the Berlin architectural scene. He transferred characteristics of the English country house to his villas, which he managed to combine with the functionality that Werkbund members demanded from an industrial product and a modern residence. Among his most famous suburban villas in Berlin are the Freudenberg House (1907-1908), the Neuhaus House (1906-1907), and the Bloch House (1907).
