Splitting due to experiences of violence is a phenomenon as old as humanity itself. For a hundred years, it has also been described how it feels when small children repeatedly endure overwhelming stress inflicted by adults, causing them to "leave internally." Some of them develop a multiple personality—a trauma-induced splitting of personality that is now referred to as "dissociative identity." The "many-being" also demands a lot from those affected: constantly navigating a world that abruptly changes in frightening ways and occasionally feels completely foreign to them. Professional helpers also reach their limits when trying to understand highly dissociative children, adolescents, and adults.
