Product details

This comprehensive book focuses on the construction activities in Vienna during the National Socialist era. With the establishment of Greater Vienna, the Danube metropolis rose to become the second-largest city in the Reich after Berlin. Spatial models were developed, and Vienna's geopolitical role within the Reich was defined. A multitude of plans followed, ranging from monumental district projects to individual buildings, as well as infrastructure, industrial, and development concepts. Architecture and urban planning were instrumentalized for the aggressive expansionist policies of the Nazi regime. The construction and planning activities for Vienna during the Third Reich, presented here for the first time, allow for an analysis of buildings in relation to the goals of the Nazi regime. The book also addresses the widespread myth that Vienna played no or only a subordinate role in the planning activities of the National Socialist state.
