This volume presents the scientific foundations for the design and sizing of earthmoving and surface mining machines. The two different machine sectors are addressed together because the excavation process requires the same technological principles. The basic knowledge is preceded by supplementary sections on soil physics and advanced drive technology. The numerous images used (sketches, principle representations, technical drawings), as well as tables and diagrams for technical explanations, illustrate important concepts to the engineer even without words.
