We live in the age of information and believe that we have invented something completely new with the computer. However, for millions of years, nature has been forming information-processing systems whose complexity far exceeds that created by humans. In what ways do biological and artificial information systems differ and in what ways are they similar? The author explores this question and compares, in four exciting parts of the book: biological cells and cellular automata and their methods of information exchange, natural and software infections and their countermeasures with the body's defense mechanisms or virus detection programs, the genetic code that developed over a long evolution, and genetic algorithms that attempt to simulate an evolutionary process, as well as the brain with its complex structures and neural networks.
