Every two years, the Federal Minister for Economic Affairs awards the Federal Prize for Promoters of Design. This award honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the emergence and realization of high design quality in Germany. In 1993, the jury, led by Dieter Rams, chose an entrepreneur: Klaus J. Maack, managing director of ERCO Leuchten in Lüdenscheid. This book, featuring numerous illustrations and contributions from Mario Bellini, Rolf Fehlbaum, Norman Foster, Wolfgang Pehnt, and others, portrays the concepts, decisions, and successes of a man whose holistic understanding of design ("Light instead of luminaires") has been recognized worldwide for three decades.
