The study attempts to outline the living environment of the Protestant village during the Weimar Republic and to identify the inherent mechanisms of political will formation. It concludes that in the village community, social authority could still be relatively seamlessly translated into political leadership. The NSDAP primarily benefited from this during elections, as it managed to secure the goodwill of many village dignitaries—landlords, large farmers, village pastors, and rural teachers—thereby presenting itself appropriately within the social milieu. Thus, the politically unoccupied Protestant village, in contrast to the Catholic countryside, was conquered by the party that understood better than all its competitors how to politically embed itself in this environment.
