Product details
The mysterious invitation of an American millionaire brings together four men at a resort in the Czech Republic, who had previously met in the 1990s: a Hungarian, a Pole, a Czech, and a German from the former East Germany. They are tasked with designing a monument for Central Europe. This not only requires them to engage with the history and present of their countries but also to confront their own pasts. They are not alone; their past is confusingly present in the form of the woman by the millionaire's side, and the present is represented by the Czech receptionist and the nephew of the Pole, members of the younger generation. Can this go well? The play was created in 2020 and 2021 through online dialogue during the Covid lockdown. The authors were pleased to maintain closeness through their collaborative work on the play while also gaining a better understanding of the phenomenon of Central Europe, which was a recurring topic in their conversations. The play connects different perspectives on Central Europe, those of the characters and those of the authors, who met many years ago as writer and translator and became friends.
