The collection of the Vitra Design Museum is one of the most important design collections in the world. It includes approximately 20,000 objects, including 7,000 pieces of furniture, over 1,000 lighting fixtures, as well as archives and estates from designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton, and Alexander Girard. In the summer of 2016, the museum opened a building designed by architects Herzog and de Meuron, where this collection is permanently displayed: the Vitra Schaudepot. At the heart of the Schaudepot is a permanent exhibition featuring over 400 key pieces of modern furniture design from 1800 to the present day. This is complemented by thematic insights into other collection holdings, a material library, and a comprehensive digital catalog. The Schaudepot is the largest permanent exhibition of modern furniture design in the world and also serves as a transparent design museum that makes contemporary museum work visible in all its facets.
