They undoubtedly belong to the rarities of the collection holdings of the Freising City Archive: the photographs from the second half of the 19th century. Local pioneers of photography such as Anton Unthal, Julius Lösch, and Franz Ress captured Freising before and during a multifaceted process of social, economic, and cultural change. Often, there was an attempt to photographically document ensembles that were threatened in their existence, going beyond a commercially oriented choice of motifs. The present volume presents a selection of 60 photographs from the 1860s to the 1890s. The core collection from the Freising City Archive is supplemented by several photographs from the collections of the Historical Society of Freising, the Freising Volunteer Fire Department, the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Archive, the Freising Cathedral Library, as well as from private sources.
