China has risen to become a global player in the world economy and politics over the past 30 years. The vast foreign exchange reserves and modern metropolises particularly shape the Western perception of the People's Republic. Recently, China has stopped receiving development aid from Germany and several other countries. Amidst the economic success, it is often forgotten that there is still enormous need for action in many areas in China, such as environmental protection and social security. At the same time, the Middle Kingdom is increasingly acting as a donor of development aid and taking on a global role model position in certain areas, such as poverty alleviation. Daniel Ludwig illustrates the different roles of the country in international development cooperation using the example of China's collaboration with the World Bank Group.
