While Zwingli's view of the Lord's Supper in Zurich replaced the historical remembrance with the idea of real presence, the handling of written documents revealed a veneration for materiality that appeared Catholic to contemporaries. The self-testimonies discussed in the book owe their documentation as well as their preservation in official and family archives largely to this very cult. This was also based on an early modern concept of honor that could not exist without materiality. The new approach to self-testimonies as objects with quasi-sacred character opens up a new perspective on Zurich in the confessional age.
