Von Berlin nach Jerusalem und zurück
German, Noam Zadoff, 2020Product details
On an autumn morning in 1923, a small ship entered the port of Jaffa, Palestine. Among the few travelers on board was a young Jew from Germany who would make fundamental contributions to Jewish scholarship in the 20th century and establish a new field of research with Kabbalah studies. Gershom Gerhard Scholem left Germany to fulfill his Zionist dream in the land of Israel. In his autobiography published in 1977, he describes his emigration "from Berlin to Jerusalem" as a one-way journey. Yet, even after his emigration, Scholem remained in contact with the Jewish intellectual world in Germany: in the 1920s and 1930s, he published numerous essays in German newspapers and magazines and collaborated with German-Jewish publishers. He also participated in various activities in Palestine.
