The architect Rudolf Schwarz, an unconventional representative of modernism, is primarily remembered as a great church builder. He understood modern construction differently than his avant-garde contemporaries from the Bauhaus: not solely from a functional perspective, but from a metaphysical reason that he powerfully articulated in his famous essay "Vom Bau der Kirche" ("On the Construction of the Church"). When Schwarz was released from French captivity in 1946, he had the concept of another fundamental work in tow, which was published in 1949: "Von der Bebauung der Erde" ("On the Development of the Earth"). This work does not start from the aesthetics of building forms or practical-functional needs, but places the building human within a world theater of becoming and passing away. The grand forms of construction, the hollows and towers of temples and domes, appear as if already laid out in the primal construction of the earth.
