The book chronologically examines the relationship between youth cultures, popular music, sexuality, and gender from the beginning of the Federal Republic of Germany to the new millennium. Following an introductory section that explains the central themes, the trends in rock and pop music and youth cultures are analyzed in the context of economic and social development, focusing on gender and sexuality, with a particular youth culture that defined the decade being highlighted. The central question is whether and to what extent youth cultures have contributed to more self-determined sexuality and representations of gender.
