When the actress Channa Maron passed away in 2014 at the age of 93, Israel lost not only its "Queen of the Stage" but also one of the most committed voices for reconciliation with the Palestinian people. At just eight years old, Hannele was already a child star on Berlin stages and in front of Fritz Lang's camera, before fleeing with her family from the Nazis to Palestine in 1933. Throughout her life, her art and her tumultuous biography were closely intertwined with political events. When she lost a leg in a 1970 attack by Palestinian terrorists, the combative Channa Maron was neither driven off the stage nor did she lose her courage and political stance—instead, the great Israeli patriot intensified her struggle for the necessity of an independent Palestinian state. The hope for peace should remain.
