Social development has two "gaits": social change within the framework of a socioeconomic development model and phases of upheaval in which economic and lifestyle patterns fundamentally change. German society is currently undergoing such a phase of upheaval. Uncertain employment participation, increasing diversity of gender arrangements in households, growing social selectivity of the preventive-oriented German welfare state, and rising educational inequality all challenge the typical participation model of the post-war decades in Germany. Social inequality and diversity, as well as stability and turbulence in life courses, are increasing simultaneously. The socioeconomic reporting approach utilizes macroeconomic indicators and individual data from companies, businesses, regions, households, and individuals to observe this upheaval.
