The book provides an overview of various approaches in the sociology of education. Following PISA, interest in sociological explanations of dimensions of inequality has increased. However, the perspectives of the sociology of education were already developed much earlier; some models created in the 1970s still claim relevance today. Additionally, newer approaches have emerged. As shown in the book, there are currently institutional and socialization theories, theories of inequality and differentiation, decision theory, phenomenological, and organization-related concepts available as perspectives in the sociology of education, which can also be utilized by other disciplines.
