Organizations operate in the form of knowledge-based systems. Doris Burger examines the relevance of knowledge in organizations, focusing on computer-assisted knowledge transfer and knowledge generation. She first outlines the difference between tacit and explicit knowledge, as well as the characteristics of knowledge. Based on a shared understanding of the concept of knowledge, she analyzes the significance of information technology in organizations. The work is based on 20 qualitative expert interviews with executives. Drawing on knowledge-relevant processes in organizations, executives describe their handling of knowledge, the importance of core competencies, organizational learning, and the relevance of information technology in their roles as organizational experts.
