Product details

The question of social belonging and (national) self-determination has not lost its urgency in light of ongoing processes of globalization and is at the center of numerous debates. Using the case study of the popular initiative "for democratic naturalizations," Florian Elliker illustrates which discourses dominate the debate on direct democracy and migration in Switzerland. How are demands for political participation as well as for the inclusion and exclusion of migrants articulated in the media and political public sphere? The author places these discourses within the context of conservative and liberal traditions of thought. He demonstrates that demands for direct political participation and self-determination are dominated by a radicalized, conservative discourse.
