Private schools are often the subject of intense discussions in politics, the media, among teachers, and parents. However, there is hardly any empirical research on this topic. Peter Suter analyzes the motives and backgrounds in Switzerland that lead parents to send their child to a private primary school. He shows that the quality and performance level of the school are secondary to the choice—despite these aspects being cited as the central criteria for a good school. Parents who opt for a private school are usually expatriates with a high socioeconomic status, primarily interested in a bilingual education and a comprehensive care offering. Overall, the results indicate that school choice is primarily guided by habit rather than being the result of a rational decision.
