Advertising has discovered the 50-plus generation. It seems to be as gray as its future main target group - the elderly. But what does the representation of age in advertising look like? This question guided a content analysis of advertisements in public media. The study's result is that for the marketing of age-exclusive products, stereotypical images of aging with little basis in reality are found in the health, cosmetics, and insurance sectors. In contrast, very heterogeneous and also very positive images of aging dominate the communication for age-inclusive products, which are not specifically created for the elderly, but for which older individuals are featured in the advertising. Overall, the study reveals a remarkable spectrum of images and roles of aging: older people are indeed present in advertising, making it more gray.
