The FDP has remained the only small party since 1949. It has repeatedly succeeded in updating the core idea of liberalism – as seen during the Spiegel crisis or in the establishment of the social-liberal coalition. It was also able to assert itself thanks to its role as a provider of majorities, particularly during the Kohl era. After the party was sent into opposition in 1998, it has struggled to define its position within the party system.
