Since the global interpretative framework of the East-West conflict for violent confrontations within and between states has faded, an intense discussion about the transformation of war has taken place. The developments in the international order, the changes in statehood, the effective power of globalization, the politicization of ethnic identities and religions, as well as other factors, formed the context in which violent confrontations were newly observed and interpreted. War changed its face once again. The means of violence evolved and changed as drastically as the objectives of the individual warring parties and actors of violence varied. The complexity of wars became evident from the different perspectives on the events of war and the relationships of violence, and has since formed the basis for further discussions.
